The Berlin Wall
I was in 1961, 14 years old , b ut absolutely in the political events with interest . The 13th of August , 1961 was quite a normal Sunday … Long sleep and then , I do not know it any more . But it differently came . My mother was , as u sual , as first ones got up and b egun her household to u nwind , as u sual , as a matter of routine . And , b esides , ran , as u sual , the radio . ( Watch TV there was with us only in 1968. ) The radionews b elonged with us always to the normal daily routine .
And in this Sunday morning of the 13th of August , 1961 there was news , disconcerting news . " The Soviet zone has b olted Berlin -
The u ncertainty lt was suitable not to say, the fear. lt My mother woke up us -
The west allies, real lt men in Berlin were did nothing around lt the b reak of the Potsdam agreement to lt prevent. Neither from Washington, nor from Paris or London, lt never mind from Bonn, there were statements. Whether an lt action of the allies had changed the lt run of the history, is speculation.
The population , we felt abandoned in these first days of the bu ilding of the Berlin Wall and we were afraid . It was clearly noticeable fear .
In the cinema we could see in the " weekly show " then also the pictures in addition . Pictures , how the wall b it by b it originated and pictures about the first dramatic escapes …
I myself have experienced the wall , or the division of Berlin twice " in the original ". Once in 1963 when we made the graduation journey to Berlin . Here have remained to me the visit in Ostberlin and the " provocation " of the west Berliners in recollection . Without permission of our teacher we have " entered " about the crossing Friedrichstrasse to Ostberlin and were disappointed . The crossing of the b order was discouraging . In a long , b adly illuminated way there was a hole in the wall by which one had to put his identity card without seeing the person b ehind it generally . Then one had to show the Portmonee and show his ( west ) to money and b rag . Then in Ostberlin we have stayed only b riefly , everything was dreary and attractive a little . However , it was for us about the " adventure ". Of subway station Friedrichstrasse lay in the east part of the town and was also guarded by the Vopo . The subway station was served only from the west and was inaccessible for the east Berliners . Whenever we " free exit " had we are " natural " there , around in the railway station kiosk cigarettes ( about 16-
Then my second " visit of the wall " was not ( historically ) interesting more pleasantly , however , less . In 1990 the wall at the Brandenburg Gate was opened and I am over from the east ( we had gone in Thuringia to vacation ) to ' Berlin -
However , at the good end I would still like to describe my experience of the " Fall of the Wall ". Since the summer , 1989 we have pursued the development in the GDR with b ig interest . There the message refugees were in Warsaw and Prague , there the b order opening was in Hungary and we have seen this very closely b ecause refugees were also accommodated in Alzey in a gymnasium .
On the 9th of November , 1989 I had to take part officially in a local council meeting in home Framers and at the b eginning with 19. 00 o'clock taken down . Because the meeting b egan , however , really only at 20. 00 o'clock , I went b ack home and heard in the car the u nbelievable news : " Ostberlin has opened the b orders ".
Then at home there was only the news and , I b elieve , I have come for the first time too late to a local council meeting . It was a happy historical moment and I " was present ".
