Erinnerungen 1989 bis 2011

It is October 2011 now, just another Month? Almost every month, some event tor episode will be remembered. Sometimes it is a ‘Crown-
Among the recent conmemorations, we observed in August this year the 50th year of the building of the Berlin Wall and more recently, in September, we recalled ‘9/11’, 10 years after. Both original events had an important impact on many people and the effects are sometimes still present.
But let me look to these two events, and a little further….
First, 9/11. I know exacltly were I was on that moment in 2001: in the visitors area of the Dutch Ministry of Defence, with a Group of East-
And the start of the building of the Berlin Wall? I had to think: it was August 1961, I was probably on leave, after completing my first year at the Naval Institute. Yes, I recall it was in the media, but if I look back, I guess that for us in The Netherlands, it meaned less than in West Germany or in Berlin proper. There it was, and in this August we all were reminded on that: a city was thorn apart, families were splitted and a big ‘Fait-
On 9 November, several events are commemmorated. The fall of the Berlin Wall is one of them. It is the main symbol of the end of the Cold War, but not the one and only. Ask in Prague and Budapest what happened earlier in 1989. But I very well remember were I was when I ‘watched’ the ‘fall‘. In those days I was working in NATO Headquarters in Brussels, where we were close with our eyes and noses on developments in the field of security.
In January 1990, I attended a conference, somewhere in Bavaria. One of the speakers showed us a scenario on what could happen in the months to come, with regard to merging West and East Germany. This were later called the "Two plus Four Talks". After the speach, many from the audience thought and said that that scenario as presented, was impossible. But, it was exactly what happended. I cannot deny that a great fear in those days was that if the price for unification was the leaving of Germany from NATO, that price would be paid.
In July 1991, I was in a Group from the NATO Defense College in Rome on a visit to Berlin. Several of the groupmembers were accompagnied by their spouses. In contacts with the hosts in Berlin, it was decided that we should stay in two connected hotels in the former East Berlin: the Dom hotel and the Hof hotel. Those who were with spouse, like me, stayed in the one, those on their own, in the other. We were surprised about the luxury in the hotel. I noticed that the elevator in the building was from 1988: from the ‘old days.’ Those who stayed in the other hotel were very unhappy about the very basic facilities. We found out that these hotels were build for the DDR party-
October 2011
